How to Go Zero Waste for Beginners

It can be a bit overwhelming when you're trying to figure out how to start a zero waste lifestyle. When I first started out, all I want to do was minimize using single use plastics and I didn't know zero waste was a thing. So I had to learn to do things along the way and from others too.

Here are some helpful tips on how to start going zero waste:

1. Why do you want to embrace a Zero Waste Lifestyle. Write down on a piece of paper or your phone the reasons why you want to go zero waste. Probably you want to save the environment, save money or avoid harmful chemicals in products. This is important to go back and read on when you feel unmotivated or you lost a little bit of that passion in the first place.

2. Start by eliminating single use items. When you try to trash audit, you probably would see how many single use items you use on a daily basis. Try to eliminate using paper napkins, plastic spoon or fork, plastic bags, etc.

3. Be prepared. We usually opt for single use items whenever we don't want inconvenience. Think about it. When we are running late for work, we want to buy a cup of coffee at Starbucks with a plastic cup and lid. On our way back home, we are so tired that we just want to buy take out for dinner with styrofoam containers and they're placed in a plastic bag. If we had only prepared ourselves the night before such as bringing our own cup for coffee, refillable water bottle, food containers, spoon and forks, we are helping the environment with one less plastic to deal with.

4. Use what you have. When embracing a zero waste lifestyle, people often think we have to buy a new stainless steel food container or bamboo utensils. You don't need to. Look around your kitchen and grab your tupperware and silverware at home which could save you money.

5. Buy second hand. When you have to buy an item, you could always look at thrift stores. They have items that are made of quality materials at a much lower price too. I buy most of my clothing and glassware from thrift stores :)

6. Focus on personal products. I got this tip from the owner of the Package Free Shop in New York. If you are just starting out, the best option is to start buying personal products such as shampoo and conditioner bars, safety razor, bar soap, bamboo toothbrush, tooth powder, etc.

7. Learn how to make things yourself. The fun part of going zero waste is making your own beauty products with organic ingredients or products that could be found in your home. I first started with an apple cider vinegar toner and flax seed hair gel. And as I discover more and more zero waste bloggers, I learn more DIY zero waste skincare and makeup products I could try at home!

8. Get involved in your community and shop locally. When I started buying zero waste alternative products online, I reflected if I'm being sustainable by doing so. Hence, I tried looking for local shops where I could buy these products and indeed, there are people who are selling zero waste products and more people who are trying to make the shift. I have spent some time with them learning a few tips and tricks a long the way. You could also support local farmers, shop at bulk stores, or help during a local cleanup.
