Why Minimalism?

why minimalism

A lot of people nowadays think that minimalism is all about having n amount of stuff, having white or black modern furniture, etc. Now, they're not entirely wrong. Some minimalists own 51 things and only have white aesthetic in their home. But its not entirely that.

Personally, I think of minimalism as a way of living with less clutter, stress, debt, time cleaning and make room for things that really matter. Like time for a hobby, time to do what I love, time with my family, time to relax, more money for travel. Things that will bring value to my life.

The minimalists sums it up in a single sentence as a tool to rid yourself of life's excess in favor of focusing on what's important- so you can find happiness, fulfillment, and freedom. I first heard of minimalism from Youtube, when Jenny Mustard talked about her journey. It took me months to start decluttering, but what pushed me was the realization that I tend to clean my room almost everyday because I have so much stuff. And I also realized I hate cleaning. I want to spend more time with my studies and my hobby.

Most people I know who are minimalists, have different reasons WHY they are minimalists. You have read my first reason, but as time passes by I tend to add more reasons to my list. If you're new to minimalism, and simply want to understand what it is, why more people are incorporating it in their lives, and how you could apply it to yours, keep reading on.

1. When you're getting ready for school or work, you look at your wardrobe saying "I don't have anything to wear", hoping minimalism is the solution. If choosing outfits every morning is a challenge for you, you probably have a lot of clothes that you don't like as much.

2. When you're stressed or overwhelmed, hoping minimalism can help you find an answer. Those times you're running late and rummaging through your bag to find your car keys and house keys. Or that time when you are in a cab on your way to the airport fearing to miss a flight, only to find out that you left your passport at home.

3. When you're in debt and juggling with bills, and you're hoping minimalism can slowly get you out of debt and manage your finances. Even if you're in debt, you still shop to reward yourself when you're bored or you got your bonus.

4. When you're drowned with things to do, and you're hoping minimalism can help you with time efficiency and management. You're constantly canceling a scheduled get together with friends or can't even sit down for a proper meal with your family.

5. When you're having health issues, and you're hoping minimalism can help you listen to your body. You've been gaining weight and catching breath after a short walk. You're doctor found something and you're worried if you'll ever see your daughter walk down the isle.

6. When you're worried of how much trash we are accumulating in this world, and you're hoping minimalism can help mother earth. You're wondering what happens with the straws, plastics and styrofoams that you use on a daily basis.

7. When you're in a toxic relationship, and you're hoping minimalism can help save it. You're not happy being with your friend or significant other and it worries you where the relationship is going.

8. When you're consumed in chasing your goals or still figuring out what you want to do with your life or you're not sure who you are any more, and you're hoping minimalism will give you the space to figure that out. You're worried that you might end up in struggle or a failure or disappointment to your family.

If you're experiencing some of the situations I listed, you probably should consider reading articles about minimalism and how you could incorporate it in your life. I know I needed to because everything listed above are my whys.
