Have you ever thought about incorporating minimalism into your life? Well, lucky for you, I gathered some tips I did when I started decluttering.
1. Start Small. When I say start small, start with the small things in your life, like your work space, bag or your room. When I started decluttering, I wasn't ready to do anything huge 'cause I was scared I would have withdrawals. But starting small made me realize it wasn't bad at all, in fact having a light hand bag or a clear desk helped me a lot. Which pushed me into decluttering my entire room.
2. Or start by category such as clothes, shoes, beauty products, accessories, papers. After a few weeks of decluttering, I began purging my clothes which took two whole days to finish.
3. Sort. In decluttering, we don't grab several shirts and just donate them or keep them. We go through a process which I like to call assess and sort.
- things to keep - these are things that give you joy or things that you need or use on a daily basis
- things to recycle - things that you could use as organizers or your could refill or give to a local recycling station
- things to say good bye to - these are things you think you will no longer use or need, you can give these to your friends, family or you could donate it or if it is no longer usable, throw it away
- maybe pile - these are things that you couldn't really decide what to do, we all have those things. What to do with it? Keep everything in a box, take out what you need to use and after 30 - 60 days, what's left will be the things to say good bye to
5. Don't buy anything for the few days after decluttering unless you need it. With all the new space you have, its tempting to buy more stuff to fill it. Sometimes, you would think you shouldn't have thrown away that skirt. Just don't buy anything unless it is really important or it is an essential.
6. Don't forget to focus on the big stuff, too. I mean TV, computer, piano, shelves, tables, beds, etc. It might be a huge decision but think about it, do you really need it?
7. Organize and give everything a home. Give some love to your things. This is really important. A great tip would be to keep like things together so that you would be able to see what you still have.
8. Mark your calendar for your next decluttering. "Another decluttering?" you might ask. But as time passes by, as you start living a minimalist life, you might change your style or finally decide that you don't want those that you first kept. In my case, after two years of minimalism, I wear less color and more neutrals, I started using only cruelty-free beauty products, etc.
What tips could you add to the list?
